In 2012, Aix-Marseille University, the biggest university in France in terms of number of students, partially renewed its trainings by opening new and ambitious programs. One of the clearest examples of this renewal is certainly the Sciences and Humanities bachelor program (S&H).
Result of a common reflexion that started in 2009 between specialists of disciplines as diverse as Anthropology, Biology, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Linguistics or Sociology, this complex and demanding program aims at training the citizens and actors of the major changes that will have to be faced in the XXIst century.
Indeed, there is no doubt that the global questions that will have to be tackled along this century will need answers combining all together deep technical, environmental, philosophical and ethical aspects. Such a complex combination of very specialized point of views, that a common disciplinary specialist – or a plain group of specialists form different disciplines – would probably not be able to fomulate on his own.
That is why, the S&H bachelor program of the Aix Marseille University proposes the cross-disciplinary training of students to a « complex thinking ».
At the end of the program, students may naturally carry on their studies in any disciplinary Master of the university (providing a specialization in the concerned discipline during the third year), as well as in carreers that require a solid scientific education, such as scientific journalist, school teacher, scientific editor…
An admission of students after an interview and/or examination of their file at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris (ENS-Ulm) or Lyon (ENS-Lyon), or at the Institute of Political Sciences in Aix-en-provence (IEP-Aix) is also possible at the end of the S&H bachelor. Indeed, one of the central concerns of this education program is also to offer as much professional and academical prospects as possible to our students, while guaranteeing a very high level of training.
For instance, the choice of a potential disciplinary specialization will be foreplaned during the second year. And then built together by the student, a professor of the discipline involved in the S&H bachelor program and a professor involved in the concerned disciplinary Master all along the third year, so as to match the requirements of an insertion in the chosen Master course.
